He is especially known for his explorations of Greenland and his studies of the Inuit peoples of the Arctic. Rasmussen was born in Greenland to a Danish father and a Greenlandic mother. He was the first European to cross the Northwest Passage via dog sled. He remains well-known in Greenland, Denmark, and among the Inuit populations of Canada and Alaska for his contributions to the understanding of Inuit culture and for his exploration of the Arctic. Rasmussen led several important scientific expeditions, including the Thule Expeditions, which aimed to explore and map the northernmost parts of Greenland. His work was not only geographical but also ethnographic. He spent considerable time living among the Inuit and studying their cultures, languages, and traditions. Rasmussen wrote several books about his expeditions and his studies of the Inuit. His works are considered important contributions to the fields of exploration, anthropology, and Arctic studies. He died in 1933 from food poisoning after eating kiviaq, a traditional Inuit fermented bird dish." / Inuits. Eskimos. \Thule Expedition. Arctic regions. Arctique. Arctic Regions. Polar Exploration.
