Staple and surrounding paper (approximately 1/2 inch square total) rusted; center horizontal fold crease to all letter; else overall very good, with usual yellowing and edge-wear. Three of the letters unsigned, including one to Laura Cohn of Bodley Head. First letter loose from staple. Item #90671
Wright gives detailed and caring advice to Gatheru on the editing and publishing of his autobiography Child of Two Worlds, which was published five years later. Gatheru, a Kenyan writer and author of at least three published works, was born in 1925 and died in 2011. Gatheru had asked Wright to write the introduction, to which Wright replies: "I'd not agree to write the introduction to this unless I could talk to you personally. An introduction is to help the book. What I'd have to say might not meet your liking. I know this problem much better from the psychological angle than from the political, and what I'd have to say might prove offensive both to whites and blacks. My aim is simply to tell the truth. And the truthis, with you as well as me, that we've encountered more experience than we can handle and can meaningfully relate to our living." || Correspondence. Black Writers, African American Writers. Gatheru, Reuel Mugo (R. Mugo Gatheru) ; Pan-Africanism. TLS. Rare unpublished correspondence.
